I think Sam should not have hid the gun. He knows it is there, and if gets really angry he might go after the gun to kill someone. He should have told his father because he would have gotten rid of it, or keep it but at least know it is in the house. If police come searching the house (which they might do because of Stick's involvement with the black panthers) then the father can help make sure they do not find the gun. If they found it, the police would have "prof" that the family is violent and they would all be arrested. Sam should stay out of the black panthers because they are a violent group. Killing people or threatening to kill people is not the way to get one's point across.
