Yes, there was a huge amount of violence aimed at African Americans in that time period, but I do not think that acting violently towards the whites would be a successful solution. First of all, if someone black acts violently, it gives the white people a reason to arrest and continue acting unfairly, whereas if he is nonviolent and peaceful there is no justification for the arrest or harm of a black man or woman. You can do so many more things to help the Civil Rights Movement if you are not in jail. Additionally, while hurting people may seem like the best way to get the point across, in reality, it will only backfire. Nonviolence will get people to understand that white people are not intrinsically superior to black people, and most importantly, it will do that without hurting anyone. If given a choice, I would choose nonviolence over violence.

  2. Well put- being in jail really won't help much at all. Out of jail, one can attend the demonstrations, and actually make a difference.
