I think that Sam should have gotten rid of the gun, and at least should not have hidden the gun under his own bed because if the gun is found he will be blamed, when really he was just protecting his brother. I think Sam should not get any more involved than he already is, but he does not want to sever any of the few remaining ties with his brother, so he is at least partially involved whether he likes it or not.
