I think that I could not get violent even if it was for a good cause.  I don't believe in violence and I don't think Sam does either, I think that Sam knows violence is not the answer but he sees that violence is getting  what his people want, equal rights, more quickly.  I think Stick doesn't believe in violence but he saw the same thing Sam does now, a long time ago. I don't think it's "ok" to get violent for what you want but in this case I could see how, if I were in Sam or Sticks position, I would think it's ok.
